For Colour Inkspiration Challenge #203, I was inspired by the soft mosaic tones in the image and immediately gravitated towards a combination of Balmy Blue, Azure Afternoon and Smoky Slate. The result is a fresh, elegant birthday card created with the Stampin’ Up! Lovely Arrangements Bundle.

If you love floral cardmaking with clean lines and layered detail, this project is a beautiful way to explore white heat embossing and ink blending together.

White Heat Embossing for Crisp Detail

The foundation of this card begins with white heat embossing. I stamped the floral images from the Lovely Arrangements stamp set onto Basic White cardstock using Versamark ink, then heat embossed with white embossing powder.

White embossing creates a resist effect when you add colour over the top. The raised embossed lines hold their brightness while the ink blends around them, giving you instant definition without needing advanced colouring techniques. It is one of the easiest ways to achieve a polished, professional look.

Blending Azure Afternoon for Soft Dimension

To colour the flowers, I used a blending brush and Azure Afternoon ink. Rather than colouring each petal individually, I softly blended ink over the entire flower, allowing the white embossed lines to define the details.

Tip: Start with a light hand and build the colour gradually from the centre of the flower outward. This naturally creates depth and keeps the outer petals lighter for a soft, dimensional finish.

Azure Afternoon is bold and vibrant, but when blended lightly it takes on a softer tone that pairs beautifully with Balmy Blue and Smoky Slate.

Layering Leaves for Interest and Contrast

The leaves were created using two different techniques to add visual interest.

Some leaves were stamped in Smoky Slate and die cut using the coordinating Lovely Arrangements dies. The grey keeps the design grounded and ties into the background layer.

Additional die cut leaves in Balmy Blue were tucked behind the flowers to add contrast without overwhelming the composition. Mixing stamped leaves with solid die cut leaves is an easy way to add layers without introducing too many competing colours.

This layering approach creates fullness and movement while keeping the overall look cohesive and calm.

Smoky Slate Background with Ink Flicking

The background panel is Smoky Slate cardstock layered onto a coordinating card base. To prevent the grey from feeling flat, I added subtle ink flicking.

Using a small brush and diluted Smoky Slate ink, I gently flicked ink across the panel. This technique adds texture and a slightly artistic feel without distracting from the floral focal point.

Tip: Protect your workspace and test your flicking motion on scrap paper first. Less is more. A few controlled splatters look intentional and refined.

Finishing Touches and Sentiment

The “Happy Birthday” sentiment was kept simple and clean to balance the layered florals. By keeping the sentiment narrow and understated, the flowers remain the hero of the design.

The overall composition features clustered florals on one side, balanced by subtle layering and open space on the other. This asymmetrical layout adds modern elegance while still feeling soft and romantic.

Why the Stampin Up Lovely Arrangements Bundle is Worth Having

The Stampin Up Lovely Arrangements Bundle is ideal for cardmakers who enjoy building layered floral designs with coordinating dies. The ability to stamp, emboss, blend and die cut all within one cohesive set makes it incredibly versatile for birthdays, thank you cards and everyday occasions.

I would love to see how you interpret this Colour Inkspiration Challenge. Blue florals never go out of style, and this combination feels both fresh and timeless.

Cheers for Now

Shop my ONLINE STORE

Join The Artful Stampers Team – Happy Shoppers, <g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="11" data-gr-id="11">Hobbiest</g>, Part Time and Full Time welcome!

Creative Card Makers Club

Watch me on YouTube

Socialise with me on FaceBook

Email Me

There is something incredibly calming about a blue and grey colour palette.
