How to Use the Stampin’ Up! Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder for Stunning Handmade Cards
If you’re looking for an easy way to add bold texture and dimension to your card fronts, the Stampin Up Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder is a must-have. In this cardmaking tutorial, I’ll show you how to use a simple ink pad dragging technique to highlight the debossed details—and how I coloured the floral design using Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers for maximum impact.

What Is the Stampin Up Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder?
This standalone 3D embossing folder features large sunflower and foliage images with deeply etched detail. The folder is oversized—perfect for A5 card fronts (or for cutting into multiple card panels).
- Compatible with most standard die cutting & embossing machines
- Deep 3D texture for professional-looking results
- No coordinating stamps or dies needed
Technique: Ink Pad Dragging Over Embossed Cardstock
Here’s how to get a woodgrain-style finish using your embossing folder:
- Emboss your cardstock using the Stampin Up Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder.
- Colour inside the debossed areas using Stampin’ Blends:
- Petals: Dark Daffodil Delight, Dark Lemon Lolly, Light Lemon Lolly
- Leaves: Dark Mossy Meadow, Dark Old Olive, Light Old Olive
- Centres: Pumpkin Pie, Peach Pie, Calypso Coral (stippling technique)
- Drag a dark ink pad (Early Espresso) across the raised areas to bring out texture.
- Add a layer of Pecan Pie ink for extra warmth and tone.
This technique works best with a light hand and can be built up gradually for a bold, rustic finish.
Card Design & Sentiment Tips
Originally, I planned to use alphabet dies for a dimensional “HELLO” greeting, but the background was too detailed and busy. I swapped in a stamped sentiment, which stood out much better.
Tip: Use bolder fonts or white embossing on vellum when working over busy backgrounds.
Finishing touches included:
- Double Linen Thread bow
- Coloured adhesive pearls (coloured with Stampin’ Blends #100)
- Insert panel on dark cardstock for easy writing
Bonus Idea: Try This With Two-Tone Cardstock
Stampin’ Up!’s Two-Tone Cardstock – Run it through the embossing folder, then gently sand the surface of the raised design using a sanding block to reveal the lighter core. It’s a fantastic way to create instant texture and contrast—no colouring required.
