Tiered Wiper Card Tutorial with Woodland Wishes
If you’ve been looking for a fun fold that really delivers the “wow” factor, this Tiered Wiper Card is one you’ll definitely want to add to your list. At first glance it looks like a simple card, but as soon as it’s opened, three hidden panels spring into view, revealing a collection of adorable Woodland Wishes critters.
Despite its impressive movement, this card is much easier to create than it looks. Once you’ve made the mechanism once, you’ll find yourself wanting to make more with different stamp sets and themes.
Why You’ll Love This Card
Mechanical cards always create a memorable experience for the recipient, and this Tiered Wiper Card is no exception. As the card opens, each tier slides forward independently, allowing you to build a delightful little scene with layered images.
For this version, I paired the mechanism with the Woodland Wishes stamp set, creating a woodland Christmas scene featuring the sweet bear, deer and fox. The smaller card size was redesigned specifically to suit the proportions of these images, making the finished project feel balanced without overwhelming the mechanism.
A Little Sparkle Goes a Long Way
To give the card some extra Christmas magic, I used the Shimmering Stripes paper behind each panel before adding soft ink blending.
One thing I discovered while experimenting is that the textured glitter surface behaves differently to smooth cardstock. Instead of creating a perfectly blended ombré effect, some of the ink settles between the raised stripes. Rather than fighting it, I simply blended lightly and gently wiped away any excess ink with paper towel, leaving behind a beautifully soft shimmer.
It’s a great reminder that sometimes the products lead you towards a different — and equally beautiful — finish than you originally expected.
Tips for Building the Mechanism
A few little tricks make assembling this card much easier:
- Always keep the diagonal “V” section facing you while assembling the mechanism.
- Apply adhesive only where needed. Keeping glue away from the moving sections ensures everything opens smoothly.
- Allow each layer a little drying time before adding the next one.
- Start with the smallest image on the first moving panel so it stays hidden when the card is closed.
- Before trimming your images, test the opening action to make sure nothing peeks above the top of the card.
These small adjustments help create a mechanism that opens effortlessly every time.
Creating Soft, Textured Woodland Animals
During the live tutorial I also shared how I coloured the Woodland Wishes bear using Stampin’ Blends.
Rather than aiming for perfectly smooth blending, I used loose circular motions with Dark and Light Pecan Pie, followed by Dark and Light Crumb Cake. Finally, I blended everything together with Ivory, allowing the lighter marker to soften the darker colours and create a natural mottled fur texture.
To finish, I added tiny dots of darker colour around the shadowed areas to create extra depth and interest. It isn’t about perfection—it’s about layering colour until the image develops its own personality.
The same colouring approach works beautifully on the deer and other woodland animals in the set.
The Perfect Card for Christmas
This is one of those cards that’s just as enjoyable to make as it is to give. The interactive movement makes it perfect for children and adults alike, and it’s easy to imagine recreating this design with many of the upcoming Christmas stamp sets as well.
