Discover the Art of Embossing: Subtle and Full-On Sunflower Folders
If you love tactile interest on your handmade cards, embossing folders are your best friend. In our recent live session, we explored two distinct looks using the Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder: a soft, “subtle” version and a bold, “full-on” version. Both create striking backgrounds, and each can be tailored to your style with the right inks, embossing powders and Designer Series Paper (DSP).

Materials You’ll Need
- Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder (available in the Stampin’ Up! Online Store)
- Cardstock or DSP: I used Thoughtful Journey, Beautiful Gallery and the Full of Life Papers
- White craft ink
- Versamark™ ink pad
- Embossing powders: white, clear, gold, silver
- Heat tool
Subtle Embossing Technique
- Choose a darker DSP: Deep greens or browns pick up white craft ink more effectively.
- Run the folder: Place your DSP on the raised side of the folder, with the Stampin’ Up! label facing up. Emboss through your die-cutting machine.
- Apply white craft ink: Drag the Ink Pad very lightly over the raised areas. For an ultra-soft look, keep pressure minimal and let the ink settle into the veins and petals. You’ll build colour gradually—multiple thin layers beat one heavy coat.
- Dry naturally: White ink can smudge if heat-set immediately. Allow it to air-dry, then trim and adhere to your card base with a strong adhesive.

Full-On Embossing Technique
- Versamark™ and embossing powder: After embossing your chosen pattern paper, swipe VersaMark™ over the raised areas. Use long, even strokes to avoid flat background transfer.
- Sprinkle embossing powder: Tip off excess powder and heat-set with your heat tool. For a dramatic effect, try gold on dark brown DSP or silver on peacock-blue tones. Copper or glitter-infused powders deliver a unique shimmer.
- Clean-up tip: Keep a small paintbrush handy to flick away stray powder before heating.

Experiment and Personalise
- Swap in different embossing powders: clear powder over patterned DSP yields a whisper of shine.
- Mix DSP suites: Gallery Blooms bold florals, Thoughtful Journey textures and even subtle 6×6 papers from other suites all work beautifully.
- Combine techniques: try white craft ink on one panel and gold powder on another, then mat both on a colour-blocked card base.

Beautiful work, Alisa! Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful ideas! The siver really caught my eye but my favorite background is your finished card. Love the coloring!
